Course Overview
This course offers students a survey of classic American literature, with an eye towards understanding some of the themes and concerns that culminate in making our present-day United States of America and what we term "American" literature. Close reading and thorough discussion of texts will be emphasized. Along the way, students will have the opportunity to improve their critical thinking through a range of writings, from the critical to the creative to the personal. Vocabulary, grammar, and other elements of language will also be considered.
